🍇 Elderberry Syrup Recipe (Homemade)
Base Ingredients (for both 8 oz & 16 oz)
Dried Elderberries: ¼ cup (for 8 oz) | ½ cup (for 16 oz)
Filtered Water: 1 cup (for 8 oz) | 2 cups (for 16 oz)
Raw Honey: ¼ cup (for 8 oz) | ½ cup (for 16 oz)
Optional Herbs/Spices (adjust to taste):
½ tsp ground cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
2–4 whole cloves
½ tsp grated fresh ginger or ¼ tsp ground ginger
1 tsp lemon juice (optional for kids)
---
🥣 Instructions:
1. Simmer the Herbs
Add dried elderberries, water, and optional spices to a small saucepan.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30–40 minutes, until liquid is reduced by nearly half.
2. Mash and Strain
Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Use a spoon or masher to gently mash the elderberries to release more juice.
Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer, cheesecloth, or nut milk bag into a clean bowl or measuring cup.
3. Sweeten with Honey
Once the liquid is lukewarm (not hot), stir in raw honey and lemon juice (if using).
(Do NOT add honey to hot liquid — it destroys the beneficial enzymes.)
4. Bottle and Store
Pour syrup into an 8 oz or 16 oz glass bottle or jar with a tight lid.
Label and refrigerate. Keeps for up to 2 months in the fridge.
